Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union on the situation in Sri Lanka

The EU sends its deepest condolences to the relatives of those killed and injured and to the Government and people of Sri Lanka for the tragic loss of life.

This appalling act of terrorism must not be allowed to threaten the prospects for peace in Sri Lanka.

We continue to support the Norwegian peace facilitators' determined efforts to achieve a further round of talks on strengthening the Ceasefire Agreement between the LTTE and the Government of Sri Lanka.

The EU calls on both the LTTE and the Government of Sri Lanka to refrain from further actions liable to jeopardise the peace process.
